How OT Helps

What pediatric occupational therapy is, who it is for, and what to expect from working together.

What is pediatric occupational therapy?

A child’s “occupations” are the things that fill their day: playing, learning, getting dressed, eating, making friends. Pediatric occupational therapy helps children build the physical, sensory, thinking and social skills those everyday activities require, so they can take part fully and confidently.

Signs a child might benefit

  • Struggles with buttons, zippers, scissors, or holding a pencil
  • Handwriting is slow, messy, or painful, and homework ends in tears
  • Overwhelmed by noise, textures, clothing tags, or crowded places
  • Big reactions to small changes; transitions are a daily battle
  • Avoids playground equipment, seems clumsy, or tires quickly
  • Picky eating that goes beyond ordinary preferences
  • Trouble joining play, sharing, or keeping friendships
  • Milestones like dressing, feeding, or toileting are running behind

What a session looks like

Sessions are usually 45 to 60 minutes and look a lot like play, because that is how children learn. Every activity is chosen for a reason, whether that is an obstacle course that builds core strength or a craft that sneaks in scissor practice. Parents are welcome throughout, and each session ends with something simple to try before the next one.

In-home and telehealth

I come to your home in Hampton and the surrounding Peninsula, so skills are practiced where they will actually be used. Telehealth sessions work well for parent coaching, handwriting, and school-age children, and let me support families anywhere in Virginia.

Common questions

How do we get started?

Book a free 20-minute consultation call. We will talk about your child and your concerns, and I will tell you honestly whether OT is a good fit and what the next step would be.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed for the consultation. Some insurance plans require a physician’s referral for ongoing therapy; we will cover that on the call.

What ages do you work with?

Most of the children I see are between 1 and 12 years old. If your child is outside that range, ask; I will point you in the right direction if I am not the best fit.

How long does therapy last?

It depends on the child and the goals. Some families need a few sessions of coaching; others benefit from weekly sessions over several months. We review progress together regularly.

What does it cost?

Pricing and payment options are discussed on the consultation call so you have the full picture before committing to anything.
